She’s different because she’s not a pain in your ass with affection. God it must have been awful to have someone who loved you so much they had no desire to be without you. She doesn’t wait by her phone all day for you to send a little three-word text and she doesn’t ignore you when you cancel plans like you always do. She knows there will be a next time.
She’s different because she’s confident. She doesn’t need you to tell her she looks great, cause hell, she knows it. She’s not afraid to meet your mom; even though she’s quite critical of the way you two hold hands. She doesn’t even sob on your shoulder because people are so damn cruel. Instead she shakes it off and she moves on. Wait until she does that to you.
She’s different because she’s not off. It must be a breath of fresh air to kiss someone who doesn’t tremble and shake and scratch at her skin. Of course that must’ve been a burden to you. The other girls you’d run off to usually didn’t have to beg you to remember to be gentle. Their wrists weren’t always sore.
But you know I’m glad she’s smart. Maybe she’ll help you- push you, even. I remember you’d never speak up when you got a bad grade. I wanted so badly to help though. You lacked motivation sometimes, and I tried to talk to you about it but I was always the last person you wanted to hear it from. As much as it broke my heart, I’m sure she’d be able to handle herself.
I’m glad she’s funny. A good laugh always made you glow. There was a sparkle in your eyes that I used to know. I’m sure she sees it a lot now. But really, I do hope she makes you truly laugh. I’m sorry my humor was sometimes cruel and inappropriate. I don’t always know how to speak when I’m around you.
And my god, I’m glad she’s beautiful. Life is wonderful, especially with a great view. So enjoy it while it lasts. Life is so particular, and oddly enough it sometimes likes to take away the greatest possessions you have. Don’t ever take a laugh for granted. I’ve learned that the hard way as I cringe hearing you boast about the newest light in your life. Hell, from the darkness over here, I guess I’m happy that you’ve got some.”
